We need someone unconventional to fight for us. We do not need politically correct TV pundits or politicians who do not realize how desperate we are.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Over 50% of homeowners in Florida owe more on their home than it is worth. They cannot stand more of the same. They are pissed, deservedly so. Just who do you think they are going to vote for next Tuesday? If they think NEWT will fight; they want him on their side.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By some counts 20 million fellow Americans are unemployed or underemployed. Call it what you will....this is a DEPRESSION! Millions of families living like we are a third world country. 46 Million collecting food stamps!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The politicians are truly driving us into bankruptcy, spending money like "it's the old days" and thinking that jobs that have left for good are going to come back to cure the deficit. Profits and efficiency have trumped generosity.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"the focus on Asia “came down to two things,” said one former high-ranking Apple executive. Factories in Asia “can scale up and down faster” and “Asian supply chains have surpassed what’s in the U.S.” The result is that “we can’t compete at this point,” the executive said."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“The entire supply chain is in China now,” said another former high-ranking Apple executive. “You need a thousand rubber gaskets? That’s the factory next door. You need a million screws? That factory is a block away. You need that screw made a little bit different? We met briefly at a Lincoln Day dinner in Walla Walla and talked about my trip to Boston in the days just prior to Scott Brown's election.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have been a small business owner for 35 years, have a Bachelors of Business Administration with an accounting major.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have an idea to stimulate job growth. The target audience is other small business owners, who both sides of the aisle agree are the best engine for job growth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I think Congress should consider a regressive tax for closely held owners of small business corporations and for sole proprietors. Instead of taxing business owners more for each additional $ they earn, tax them less. Reward small business owners for growing their businesses.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The tax credit would only apply to increased income above the average of the three prior years reported income. Congress could approve a lower tax; say 10% for the increased reported incomes. The present tax rate would apply for the income average reported previously. His $billion war chest, the bully pulpit, and shear demographics (please don't call me a racist) may win him a second term.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Donald Trump, if he runs, has nothing to lose. He will be using other people's money to advertise his brand. We, on the other hand may have a lot to gain that I do not hear anyone talking about. A GOP majority in the Senate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Trump is unabashedly asking questions and raising issues that would otherwise never be heard. The 2012 GOP Senate candidates will certainly benefit from Trump raising these issues without them having to.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Who knows? Maybe that has been the plan all along. I do not underestimate "The Donald". Call it sly like a fox or anything else. To make matters worse Emanuel’s young children were in the front row of the audience.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Does anyone think it is appropriate for anyone to joke, much less the President of the United States, that an accident causing the loss of Emanuel’s middle finger rendered him mute, in front of his children? In front of a nationally televised audience that might certainly include other children? How exactly will Obama explain that to Malia Anne and Natasha? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The very off color joke offended me (and I am no prude). It offended me because of how I think it might offend others:  Christians, Muslims, Jewish, world leaders, emerging nations. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Obama seems to have no concept of the prestige the office of the President of the Unites States has meant to our country. He bows to foreign leaders, has no regard for the will of the people, distances us from our allies, associated with radicals, is on television almost every day, borrows money from our children that is not his, AND NOW reverts to telling crude jokes to the children of his departing Chief of Staff. He was the better candidate, with a better message, on a night that voters in other elections clearly voted in favor of change.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tim Burns lost for the same reason that Doug Hoffman lost in New York several months ago in a similar special election. A split GOP Conservative ticket!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I wrote in March (view earlier blog post) that Bill Russell would be the reason that Tim Burns might lose. Even after the GOP endorsed Tim Burns, Russell would not back down and made Tim Burns run two races at the same time. One within his own party, and the other against the democratic machine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In a district represented by iconic John Murtha for over twenty years, in a district where democrats outnumber Republicans two to one, Tim Burns clearly needed every vote possible to win against Murtha's replacement Mark Critz.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But Tim burns did not receive every vote possible because Bill Russell's supporters were mad that Tim Burns should not have received the nod from the GOP. So, Bill Russell acted like a small child and "took his ball and went home" and the other children could not play anymore because there was no ball left to play with.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Unpatriotic, that is what I call Bill Russell. If he would have lost graciously and supported Tim Burns then Pennsylvania's 12th District would have an "R" instead of a "D" next to its representative's name this morning.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The more the Republicans split their voters; the more seats the Democrats will hold on to this November. NY 23, PA 12, and counting.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We need losers to be patriotic and allow the party to unite if we are to win in November. What we do not need is for losers to allow their ego to split the party and allow the country to go down in defeat one election at a time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tim Burns did the rest of the country a favor by losing. I heard Tim say several times that the greatest lessons are learned in defeat. Abraham Lincoln said “Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.....that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom—and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Last week a young and hopeful candidate for a seat in the United States Congress addressed a small crowd in a small town in Pennsylvania. Tim Burns said that he “believes this country is in a fight for its very life.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Our Nation has endured many crises during the 147 years between these two short speeches, but none more similar, more representative of the same Nation divided in a civil war.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The opposing sides in the current conflict do not wear distinguishing colors of blue and grey uniforms. They do not battle with cannons, swords, and rifles. Today’s conflict, no less divisive, no less dangerous, is a battle of ideology. Like its predecessor it divides brother against brother, neighbor against neighbor, friend against friend, and to a certain extent State against State. A country, Tim Burns said, is in a fight for its very life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A fight means to engage in battle or in single combat; to attempt to defend oneself against or to subdue, defeat, or destroy an adversary. Life means the force that makes or keeps something alive.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tim Burns told the small crowd that the force that keeps our Nation alive is the Spirit of America, and we needed to fight to preserve the opportunity that allows people who want to succeed the ability to work hard and achieve everything they want. That it was not for the Federal government to determine what someone’s living wage should be. He said that the government needed to stop punishing job creators, that corporations employ people and we should not prevent them from profiting. He said that he favored a balanced budget, fiscal responsibility and a smaller federal government. Tim Burns pledged never to raise anyone’s taxes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;His opponent in this election represents the other side in this civil war. The side that wants to subdue, defeat or destroy the Spirit of America. He does not believe that people who want to achieve and corporations that employ people are the defenders of our nation. He said “that if it weren’t for unions and the Democratic party that we would not have minimum wages, a 40 hour work week and health insurance. That corporate America is only concerned about profits and they are not concerned about working men and women.” That he will fight like heck to never raise taxes on working men and women and “what I can promise is I am not going to raise any of your taxes, just his!”, as he pointed at Tim Burns and laughed at the Spirit of America, a self made millionaire, a young man that started with nothing, formed a corporation and created over 400 jobs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Over 40 million people in our country now receive government aid in the form of food stamps. One side in this civil war wants to blame, punish and tax the rich and corporations. The other side thinks that federal deficits, fiscal irresponsibility, larger government, government bailouts and favorable treatment of unions is destroying the Spirit of America, that our country is in a fight for its very life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My father was a small business owner, a neighborhood pharmacist, for 50 years. He never worked a 40 hour work week. He left the house Monday through Saturday before I woke up, and returned home after I had gone to sleep. There were four other local small business pharmacies in the community where we lived. They joined with my father to provide seven day a week service to the local residents by each taking their turn and working every fifth Sunday. So four weeks out of five my dad worked six days, eighty hours a week, and the fifth week he worked seven days. My dad sent four boys to college and provided a good home, married to my mother for over fifty years. My dad was the Spirit of America.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have been a small business owner, the owner of an insurance agency, for over 35 years. I never remember working just 40 hours a week. I do remember at times working seven days a week. I love my employees and I believe if you asked them they love me too. They are not in a union but they never work more than 40 hours, make substantially more than minimum wage and are covered by a very generous health insurance plan. I am very proud that I sent my only daughter to private college, didn’t ask for financial aid, and she graduated without any student loans. I have a loving wife, believe in God, have wonderful friends and I am the Spirit of America.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I also believe that our country is in a fight for its very life. These tipping points, better known as CAMPAIGN GAFFES, are as unpredictable as they are devastating.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Take for example the following exchange on Facebook last week between myself and Bill Russell, who recently lost the Republican nomination to Tim Burns for the special election in PA-12 on May 18, 2010 to fill the United States Congressional seat of the late John Murtha. This special election is unique because on the same day, voters will cast two votes, one for the last eight months of Murtha’s unfulfilled term, and one in the primary competing for the Republican nomination for the November 2010 election.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After reading the following (gop-wants-party-unity-but-russels-not-budging-will-write-in-himself-for-special PA-12: Bill Russell seems like he just can't take a hint, despite the GOP uniting behind Tim Burns. Russell says he'll write himself in for the special election between Burns and Democrat Mark Critz, in addition to continuing to contest the same-day GOP primary against Burns.) on swingstateproject.com I posted a comment on Bill Russell's facebook page.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Evan Hecht(wrote) Bill Russell, we honor and respect your years of military service. We appreciate the campaign you ran in 2008 against John Murtha. But Bill, we cannot win PA-12 with a split ticket against Mark Critz. We respectfully ask that you stand united with Tim Burns so you can help us change this D seat into an R seat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bill Russell(replied) Hi Evan, The only race I am running in is the Primary and the November General Election. While I will always plan to vote for myself as the best candidate for any election in the 12th CD, I am not splitting any tickets. -- V/R Bill March 22 at 7:05pm&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let me be clear of why this qualifies as a MAJOR CAMPAIGN GAFFE. Doesn’t Russell know that voting for himself in the special election is tantamount to voting for Tim Burns’ Democratic opponent, Mark Critz? Doesn’t Russell know that elections can be won or lost by the slimmest of margins? The closest election in Congressional history was decided on September 16, 1975. The 1974 New Hampshire race for an open seat that pitted Republican Louis Wyman against Democrat John Durkin led to a contest that lasted eight months and came down to a margin of victory of just two votes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Russell’s egotistical bragging that he would of course write in his name and vote for himself is a clear statement of his priorities. To him it is far more important that he thinks he is the best candidate than defeating the Democratic agenda that is socializing and bankrupting our country. His ego filled one vote could elect a Democrat and defeat Tim Burns, the Republican challenger.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bill Russell’s Facebook page at the time of his reply had over 1000 fans, several who commented in Bill’s favor immediately following his reply to me. What if some of Russell’s Facebook friends follow his advertised “I am voting for myself even though I am not on the ballot” resulting in dozens or hundreds of votes that would possibly been cast in Tim Burns’ favor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This special election is not a game. This election decides whether a Democrat or a Republican fills this seat for eight months. How much could the Republicans used just one more seat during Obama’s first 14 months. With one more seat maybe health care would have failed. With one more vote maybe immigration reform will fail. Maybe one more vote could defeat Cap &amp;amp; Trade or Card Check. One vote could determine one seat and determine major events in our country’s future. One cavalier thoughtless vote that Bill Russell boasts he will cast for himself could help to ruin our future.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Maybe Russell does not know that The Constitution grants the House several exclusive powers: the power to initiate revenue bills, to impeach officials, and to elect the President of the United States in case of an Electoral College deadlock. One vote in the election for one member of the House of Representatives could determine who is President in 2012 if there was a tie in the Electoral College.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Maybe Russell does not know that The House uses committees and their subcommittees for a variety of purposes, including the review of bills and the oversight of the executive branch. The appointment of committee members is formally made by the whole House, but the choice of members is actually made by the political parties. Generally, each party honors the preferences of individual members, giving priority on the basis of seniority. Historically, membership on committees has been in rough proportion to the party's strength in the House as a whole, with two exceptions: on the Rules Committee, the majority party fills nine of the thirteen seats. The rules committee that just played such an important role in the Democrats passing their health care legislation. One vote for one representative could determine the majority and determine the makeup of the rules committee.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Candidates can be judged in two ways: the positions they take on issues and the leadership qualities and experience they would bring to office. Both are important. Your first step in picking a candidate is to decide the issues you care about and the qualities you want in a leader.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know that the qualities I look for in a candidate is someone who cares about representing the people, not representing himself by boasting that “I will always plan to vote for myself as the best candidate for any election in the 12th CD”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Scripture reminds us "For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want" (Galatians 5:17). The battle is both inevitable and necessary for you to begin to experience spiritual freedom in your life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Congratulations Bill Russell. You have earned the Facebook POLITICAL CAMPAIGN GAFFE of the year. You had an idea, wanted to be your own boss, were determined to work as hard as need be to achieve whatever goal you had in mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You did everything: found customers to sell to, found vendors to purchase from, made the deliveries, paid the bills, provided customer service, decided on the marketing, created the advertising, sent out the invoices, called the customers who were late in paying, purchased the insurance you needed, and everyday asked yourself did I do the right thing? Am I going to make it? Will there be enough money to pay the rent, the telephone, the other necessary business expenses, and still have enough money left to pay the mortgage, feed the family, buy the children shoes, and maybe even take mom or dad out to dinner?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Then came the day that there were simply not enough hours in the day to do everything that your small business required. You needed help. You needed to hire someone. Now you had a new business expense. Did you have enough money for that too? You took on a new responsibility, a new mouth to feed, someone else’s family was now depending on your small business to provide what they needed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And then, it started. In 1937 the government added one more expense you had to add to the list of expenses your small business had to pay. Congress passed the Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA). You had to pay a tax of 1% of the salary you paid yourself personally, your small business had to pay an additional 1% tax of what you paid yourself, and your small business had to pay another 1% tax of what you paid your newly hired worker.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By 1954 the three 1% taxes listed above had doubled to 2% each, by 1966 they had doubled again to 4% each.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 1966 Congress passed a new tax on your small business, a Medicare tax. You had to pay a tax of .35% of the salary you paid yourself personally, your small business had to pay an additional .35% tax of what you paid yourself, and your small business had to pay another .35% tax of what you paid your newly hired worker.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 1967 your small business had a combined FICA tax and Medicare tax of 4.4% of what you paid your self personally, another 4.4% that your small business had to pay to match what you paid yourself personally, and 4.4% of what you paid your employee.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But of course 4.4% was not nearly enough. The government had big plans, and big plans cost big money, and the government did not make any money, but your small business did. Because you and your employee did everything: found customers to sell to, found vendors to purchase from, made the deliveries, paid the bills, provided customer service, decided on the marketing, created the advertising, sent out the invoices, called the customers who were late in paying, purchased the insurance you needed, and everyday asked yourself did I do the right thing? Am I going to make it? Will there be enough money to pay the rent, the telephone, your employee’s salary, the other necessary business expenses, and still have enough money left to pay the mortgage, feed the family, buy the children shoes, and maybe even take mom or dad out to dinner?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On March 21, 2010 Congress passed a new tax. Your small business had to purchase health insurance for your family and purchase health insurance for your employee. If your small business chose not to purchase health insurance your small business would have to pay a tax of 8% of what you paid yourself and 8% of what you paid your employee.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now in addition to asking yourself will there be enough money to pay the rent, the telephone, your employee’s salary, the taxes of 7.65% + 7.65% + 7.65% + 8.0% + 8.0%, the other necessary business expenses, and still have enough money left to pay the mortgage, feed the family, buy the children shoes, and maybe even take mom or dad out to dinner?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your answer was NO! You had no choice but to tell your employee that you could not afford to keep he, or she on the payroll. We are threatened by the process our elected officials blatantly parade in front of us on television, radio and in newspapers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We are afraid of arm twisting, back room deals, radical partisanship and a bill that contains more than 100 times the number of words in our Constitution. Just the mere mention of the word Socialism makes most of us &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;want&lt;/span&gt; to run for cover.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Personally, I do not believe there is a single Senator or Congressman that has read every word of the health care bills they have voted for and will vote for. I mean do you know how long it would take to read 2000 pages of legalese, much less read it and really understand what it says?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just a few years ago the Senate voted unanimously, 99-0, and passed the &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;Sarbanes&lt;/span&gt;-&lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;Oxley&lt;/span&gt; legislation that requires &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;CEO's&lt;/span&gt; of publicly held corporations to attest that they know their published financial statements are accurate prior to signing them, under penalty of law. Shouldn't those same Senators be required under penalty of law to attest they they know and understand the content of a bill prior to voting on it?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Why should the President and Congress be allowed to devote one third of the President's term in office to change the best health care system in the world when during these 15 months thousands of brave American soldiers have lost &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_4" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;their&lt;/span&gt; lives, and tens of millions of Americans are unemployed or under employed?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Have you shopped at the Gap, Bed Bath &amp;amp; Beyond, Costco, or &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;Wal&lt;/span&gt;-Mart and looked for anything with a label made in the USA? I have and &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_6" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;everything&lt;/span&gt; is made somewhere else, mostly in China. Speaking of China, do you believe that they are really our friends? Not only do we owe the almost one trillion dollars, yes owe them, but did you know they are stockpiling oil, iron, and every other commodity required to build an army, air force and navy that will soon be much larger than ours?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Should we sleep better because we know our national security is being threatened, our economic security is being threatened, our American heroes are shedding their blood everyday, millions of us have lost our homes, there are more homeless people in America than ever before.....just because everyday we know our politicians are meeting in back rooms, the oval office, and who knows where, to borrow more money to provide health insurance to people that can not be turned away from a hospital now?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are one of us that is not sleeping as well as you used to, blame the President because the buck always stops with the person in charge. Blame him, vote out everyone that supports him, and make damn certain that 1/20/13 is his last day in office.
